We have written extensively about the <a href=\"https:\/\/siatkibezpieczenstwa.com\/en\/safety-railings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>advantages of safety railings compared to lifelines (PPE)<\/strong><\/a> in a previous post. Permanent means of access to machinery<\/strong> &#8211; Part 3: Stairs, stepladders and guardrails&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EN ISO 13374 on &#8220;Temporary edge protection systems<\/strong> &#8212; Product specification &#8212; Test methods&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, when it comes to protecting roofs from falls from height, it should always be borne in mind that European Directive 89\/391\/EEC, which lays down the principles of preventive action, <strong>prioritizes CPE over personal protective equipment (PPE).<\/strong> The regulations clearly state that lifeline safety systems and anchor points EN ISO 795 should only be used when it is not possible to use collective protection equipment, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/siatkibezpieczenstwa.com\/en\/safety-railings\/freestanding-guardrails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>freestanding guardrails.<\/strong><\/a> The reason is simple, roof guardrails, as passive fall protection systems, exclude employee&#8217;s decision to ensure themselves or not.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-91f0f2d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"91f0f2d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4cce40c\" data-id=\"4cce40c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61c3955 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"61c3955\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">European standard EN 14122-3 \u2013 permanent roof protection <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ce997ea elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ce997ea\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f089d67\" data-id=\"f089d67\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab0b883 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab0b883\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In most cases, <strong>the installation of freestanding roof handrails is intended to permanently secure the roof edge.<\/strong> By installing safety roof railings, we ultimately want to protect all people moving across the roof for the entire lifetime of the building. This involves jobs such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Snow removal from the roof<\/li>\n<li>Inspection, maintenance and repair of equipment located on the roof<\/li>\n<li>Repairing works on the roof<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this case, when we talk about permanent roof protection by means of freestanding roof handrails, <strong>it is absolutely necessary to apply European standard EN 14122-3<\/strong> &#8211; Permanent means of access to machinery. Any kind of roof railings intended to provide permanent protection against falling from the roof, should be installed and certified in accordance with the above-mentioned European standard. In this respect, it <strong>is very important to check the maximum uprights distance allowed by the manufacturer<\/strong> in their technical documentation, as well as in tests carried out by accredited bodies according to EN 14122-3 standard.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8463fc8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8463fc8\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-70ea04f\" data-id=\"70ea04f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ae7035 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6ae7035\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">European standard EN 13374 \u2013 temporary roof protection<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-63cfe12 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"63cfe12\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ee1e9a6\" data-id=\"ee1e9a6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-601ecb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"601ecb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As stated in the preface of the aforementioned standard: &#8220;<strong>Temporary edge protection systems are used in construction work<\/strong>, primarily to prevent people and objects from falling to a lower level from roofs, edges, stairs and other areas where protection is required.&#8221; Safety railings certified according to EN 13374 are often used during the construction of reinforced concrete structures, building floors, bridges, viaducts, flyovers, etc. <strong>These are often guardrails that are easily dismantled, and are removed from the edges according to the work schedule on site.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it is possible to use freestanding roof handrails certified to EN 13374 to secure roofs, but <strong>we must always bear in mind the temporary nature of the above European standard highlighted both in the title of the standard and repeatedly in the text.<\/strong> The use of EN 13374 certified safety railings should be limited to certain activities occasionally carried out on the roof, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>repairing certain areas of the roof<\/li>\n<li>painting of equipment located on the roof<\/li>\n<li>partial renewal of the roof covering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When freestanding roof handrails are used temporarily according to EN 13374 standard, usually only those parts of the roof where work is temporarily carried out are secured. In this way, as construction work progresses, the safety railings move to the area we want to secure next.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bdcc9e1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bdcc9e1\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4e26c56\" data-id=\"4e26c56\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a635af elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1a635af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Abuse of EN 13374 standard<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-27640e3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"27640e3\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f8966c1\" data-id=\"f8966c1\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee42cb6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ee42cb6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In many cases, the only reason why freestanding roof handrails are certified according to <strong>EN 13374 standard is because, as a temporary edge protection standard, the tests are much less demanding than with EN 14122-3 standard &#8211;
