Refuse vehicle safety system SAFE-UP was awarded as the best Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in Spain in 2019. SAFE UP safety system is intended to prevent operators located at rear-loading garbage trucks from falling as the vehicle is moving from one collection point to another. SAFE-UP is the only available solution on the market that prevents this type of hazard. Refuse vehicle safety system SAFE-UP complies with all the requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/ECC as well as the European standard EN ISO 795 as Class A.

How refuse vehicle safety system SAFE-UP works?

SAFE-UP safety system consists of a pneumatic module (box) and an anchor device with a ball. Operators located at the rear of the vehicle, insert the ball connector into the pneumatic SAFE-UP module before starting the vehicle. As the anchor device ball contacts a sensor inside the SAFE UP box, the connector raise by 8 cm. That way, the operator is automatically blocked and held by the SAFE UP module. The own anchorage strain him upwards so his feet do not reach the ground in the event of a fall from the vehicle. As the operator press the red button placed at the SAFE UP box, the anchor ball fall down and the operator can release.

A panel installed at the cabin provides the driver with real-time information about the system’s rear-carried users. When the operator inserts the ball anchor device into the SAFE UP box, a green signal is displayed in the cab panel. On the other hand, when the operator steps off, e.g. due to a fall, a red signal is transmitted to the cabin and an audible alarm is immediately activated.

Why should we implement a refuse vehicle safety system as SAFE UP?

The refuse sector is particularly dangerous. Jumping off and on the waste collection vehicles, walking in and out of traffic during collecting waste bins, … and additionally, often performed in very difficult weather conditions (ice, snow, rain, etc…), which increases the fall hazard from the step at the back garbage truck when the vehicle is in motion. Another cause of accidents is the lack of proper communication between the driver and the operators carried on the rear of the refuse vehicle.

Advantages of a refuse vehicle safety system as SAFE UP

  • Real-time information for the driver about what it happens at the rear of the garbage truck
  • Very easy to use
  • Specially designed for very difficult conditions of use: water, dust, dirt, etc. Most parts of the system made of stainless steel AISI-304.
  • The only available solution on the market ensuring safety for operators located at the rear-loading refuse vehicle

Legal basis

Refuse vehicle safety system SAFE-UP is certified in accordance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/ECC as a safety system (CE marking). The ball anchor fall arrest device (connector) complies with the EN ISO 795: 2012 European standard as Class A. It is only necessary to complete the required equipment with an EN 362:2005 snap hook and a safety harness certified according to EN 361: 2002 equipped with a front catch buckle.

Final conclusions

The patented refuse vehicle safety system SAFE-UP is a unique solution to protect waste loader operators from fall hazards. The danger of falling from the step of the vehicle while collecting wastes is an important hazard to prevent in this type of work. SAFE-UP safety system allows carrying out normal waste collection works while guaranteeing 100% safety. A panel at the cab provides the driver with real-time information on system’s rear-carried operators.
